Convenience is defined as: the state of being able to proceed with something with little effort or difficulty.
Convenience like so many other things in life… is completely relative!
Case in point, this evening I decided to make tacos for dinner. I had everything I needed, except the tortillas. My first instinct was to make a quick run to the store. That’s the convenient choice, right? After all, I was hungry. Run to the store and be back in 30 minutes, maybe a little less.
But wait.
Could it actually be simpler if I made them myself?
I cook a lot from scratch and one of my goals this year is to make more things from scratch - like bread and pasta … and tortillas?
Why not give it a try.
In just a few minutes I had found a recipe online, gathered the ingredients and mixed together the dough. While the dough rested, I cooked some ground beef and prepared the ingredients for tacos. Rolling out and cooking the tortillas took about 15 minutes for the few I ate with dinner. After eating, I took about 15 minutes to finish cooking another dozen tortillas that I’ll use throughout the week.
When we think of convenience, we almost always default to the pre-packaged option. But I challenge you this week to consider other choices. Sometimes the more obvious choice, isn’t maybe as convenient as you might think.
Convenience aside, those were the best dang tortillas I’ve had in a very long time! Making my own tortillas meant that I didn’t bring any extra plastic into the house (talk about convenience!). I know my local store does not carry organic options when it comes to tortillas; by making my own I was able to use organic flour and fat that I had saved from cooking local, pastured bacon. I know what went into my tortillas.
Convenience. It’s a matter of choice. It’s all relative. I’m not here to judge or to tell you what’s convenient or if convenience should be the deciding factor in food choices. I just want to challenge you to rethink some of your assumptions. I did. And now I have a whole new appreciation for tacos!
